WIDESPREAD YET DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE, FIBROMYALGIA CAUSES PERVASIVE
ACHES AND FATIGUE

Do you constantly ache all over and have difficulty sleeping? You may be
suffering from a hard-to-diagnose condition of inflamed muscles and tendons. Fibromyalgia
is a misunderstood but prevalent condition whose full effects are only now being
recognized.
Widespread pain is the most prominent symptom of fibromyalgia,
although it may start in one area. It especially affects the muscle groups that support
the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips. Some degree of pain always is present, and, for
some, it can be quite severe.
The presence of tender points is another clue. Tender points are specific
areas of the body that hurt when pressure is applied. Usually people affected by the
syndrome don't realize these points exist until a doctor familiar with fibromyalgia
applies pressure to these areas. Other conditions often associated with fibromyalgia
include: a high level of tension and stress, sleep disturbance, pre-menstrual syndrome,
sensitivity to cold temperatures, fatigue, migraine headaches, irritable bowel syndrome,
chest pain and nervous system symptoms such as depression.
Fibromyalgia is not life threatening and does
not cause any permanent destruction to body tissues. Nonetheless, it can cause long-term
problems including a dramatic drop in one's energy level.
According to the Arthritis Foundation, an estimated 3.7 million Americans
have fibromyalgia, making it the second leading
arthritis-related condition. (Although patients with the disorder may fear that they are
developing arthritis, the disease actually does not affect the joints.) Other experts
think the numbers are greater, with perhaps as many as one in twenty Americans having this
condition. Some rheumatologists say that fibromyalgia is the
most common condition seen in their practices, especially among women younger than 50.
Many people often spend years going from doctor to doctor before receiving an accurate
diagnosis.
"Because fibromyalgia symptoms can mimic
other disorders, people go through batteries of tests to rule out other possibilities.
Even then, people with the condition often look healthy and their test results may be
normal," said Doyt L. Conn, M.D., the Arthritis Foundation's senior vice president
for medical affairs. Consequently, people are sometimes told that nothing medically is
wrong.
Although the cause and cure of this condition are not yet known, treatment
is available to help people affected by fibromyalgia. According
to the Arthritis Foundation, treatment includes medication that reduces pain and promotes
deeper sleep, aerobic exercise, stress reduction and relaxation techniques.
Fortunately, some simple steps can go a long way to help patients deal
with the disease and make improvements, added David J.DeRose, M.D., M.P.H., VP for Medical
Affairs at Living Springs Lifestyle Center in Putnam Valley, NY. In addition, he has a
daily syndicated educational radio program called "Wellness Wise." Some of the
goals in fibromyalgia treatment are as follows:
1. Improve restorative sleep:
Avoid or deal with factors that are known to interfere with what is called
stage 4 sleep. These "restorative sleep robbers" include: alcohol, family
factors, noise, pain, sleep apnea and stress.
2. Treat anxiety and relax muscles:
Drug medication is not always necessary to reach these goals. Consider
massage, sedative baths, stretching exercises, and stress management.
3. Correct misuse of muscles:
Learn proper body posture at rest and proper body mechanics for
activities. Aerobic conditioning is usually helpful if started gradually.
