FIBROMYALGIA: A MISDIAGNOSED &
MISUNDERSTOOD SYNDROME

"Fibromyalgia, a frequently misdiagnosed
and misunderstood syndrome, may be one of the most common arthritis-related
diseases," reports the Arthritis Foundation. According to the foundation, more than 2
million people meet the criteria for this syndrome.
Fibromyalgia involves chronic, widespread muscle
pain, tender points on certain parts of the body, sleep problems and fatigue.
"Several theories exist as to what causes or triggers fibromyalgia,"
said Arthur I. Grayzel, M.D., an Arthritis Foundation medical advisor. "Some
scientists believe the syndrome may be triggered by an injury or trauma. Others believe
the syndrome may be triggered by an infectious agent, such as the influenza virus, in
susceptible people." Grayzel also says that extreme physical deconditioning, brought
on by a lack of exercise and changes in muscle metabolism, may aggravate symptoms, such as
fatigue.
Because the cause of fibromyalgia is not known,
current treatments are geared to easing the painful symptoms of the disease rather than
curing it. Among the treatments are the before-bedtime use of very low doses of drugs
called tricyclic antidepressants, which promote deeper sleep. Aerobic exercise is another
commonly recommended treatment. Other treatments include modest doses of nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs or analgesics to provide pain relief relaxation techniques to help
reduce muscle tension; and occasional injection of a local anesthetic into tender points.
Patient education on how to manage symptoms is also important.
