FIBROMYALGIA RESPONDS TO ELECTROACUPUNTURE
Magazine: Health Facts, March, 1993
Section: Original Research
A few months ago, we reported on several treatments for the
musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and insomnia caused by fibromyalgia
(see Health Facts, October 1992). A new study from Switzerland has demonstrated that
electroacupuncture can be added to the list (British Medical Journal, 21 November 1992).
The Swiss investigators acknowledged that because little is known about fibromyalgia
and the standard treatment approaches are often disappointing, many people with this
condition turn to alternative medicine, and acupuncture is one of the most popular.
The Swiss study involved electroacupuncture, which employs the traditional
needles manipulated with electric current. Traditional Chinese medicine calls for the
needles to be twirled by hand after insertion.
At University Hospital in Verdana, 70 people, 54 of them women, were
randomly assigned to receive six sessions of either electroacupuncture or a sham
procedure. The latter serves as acupuncture's version of a placebo treatment because the
needles are inserted at inactive sites. This allows the participants and the physicians
who evaluated their condition to remain unaware of who was receiving the active treatment.
At the end of a three-week period, efficacy was measured in a variety of
ways, including pain scores and the number of painkillers taken. Significant relief of
symptoms was reported in those who received electroacupuncture treatments. The
investigators concluded that these encouraging results merit additional research of the
long-term effects of electroacupuncture.
