LONG-TERM FOLLOW-UP OF FIBROMYALGIA SUGGESTS THAT CONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS
AREN'T DOING MUCH GOOD

Conventional treatment appears to have little impact on the course of fibromyalgia
over the long term, even among patients who go to specialty clinics, says Frederick Wolfe,
MD.
He studied the effectiveness of current fibromyalgia
treatments in more than 1,000 patients who went to specialty clinics. Patients completed
questionnaires to help ascertain the extent of their pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression,
sleep disturbance, and perception of their own health.
The most common treatments were anti-inflammatories, tricyclic
antidepressants, acetaminophen, non-narcotic analgesics, and anti-anxiety agents.
During an average follow-up of 6.5 years, patients showed no overall
improvement over their baseline condition. Although different patients improved and
deteriorated in specific areas, there was no overall change observed in the group as a
whole.
Similarly, a separate study of 85 treated patients who were monitored for
10 to 18 years also demonstrated a lack of improvement over baseline.
"The unsatisfactory outcomes are notable because these patients were
seen at centers that specialize in fibromyalgia," Wolfe told
MODERN MEDICINE. "Conventional treatment just didn't influence their outcomes.
"Some patients do respond to conventional treatment," he
continues. "But maybe those who don't get better should receive psychological
interventions or cognitive behavior therapy instead."
He adds, however, that in his study, "we are not sure that patients
followed through fully on their prescribed treatments."
